Chapter 01
Understanding the Problem
Why visitor engagement is harder than it looks — and why traditional approaches stall.
Current industry context
Engagement gets talked about constantly and executed inconsistently. Most venues have moments of great engagement — a memorable interaction, a beautifully produced event — but the everyday cadence is inconsistent and the pre/post-visit windows are largely dark.
Why traditional approaches fall short
Traditional approaches treat engagement as a marketing responsibility, focused on email opens or social interactions. But engagement is created in the venue as much as in the inbox, and the operating disciplines rarely connect.
The market context
Visitors now expect the same quality of digital experience from physical destinations that they receive from consumer apps. The bar has moved; venues that treat engagement as an operating discipline pull away from peers.
